To prepare for a natural disaster there are many things that you will need let me show you
1. Identify the potential disasters
According to Augurisk, some of the natural disasters that are most probable in Kern County include earthquakes, wildfires, and flooding.
California has seen numerous wildfires over the last decade, including those large enough to warrant evacuation orders. The most recent includes the wildfires in Los Angeles.
While deadly earthquakes and floods are uncommon in Kern County, it is important to know the risks.
2. Create an exit strategy
After identifying the disaster, everyone should have a plan to evacuate.
Safety Culture, a website aimed at encouraging public safety, explains the importance of every public organization having an exit strategy.
Exit strategies are not just for businesses and other organizations though; every family, and individual, should have one too.
For example, consider an instance of nearby wildfires; everyone would need to have an exit strategy to leave if the fire reaches the structure. Another example would be if there was flooding, as everyone would need to know how to evacuate and what area or city they could seek shelter in.
3. Gather your supplies.
Consider the necessary supplies to help ensure survival after the disaster has occurred.
According to the American Red Cross (ARC), some necessary supplies would include
-Personal document information (birth certificates, social security cards, passports, immigrant registration cards, etc.).
-Communication devices (cell phones, battery-powered radios, etc.).
-Food (enough food and water per person for at least three days).
-Medications (pain relievers, and several days of any supplied medications).
-First aid kits (band-aids, wound wash, gauze, etc.).
-Flashlights and blankets.
For a full list of recommended supplies, check out the guide by the ARC.
4. Stay safe and remain calm until the natural disaster is over.
According to ADT sources, Once a person has identified the natural disaster, the best thing one can do to stay safe is gather all your supplies and head to a safe place.
ADT, an American home security company, states that an example of a safe location may include the basement of a house. This is very important to do during a natural disaster, as it is typically unsafe to be outside in these scenarios.
Depending on the type of disaster, it can also be unsafe to be in buildings with large glass windows or those with limited structural reinforcements.
Kern County officials have established plans that they can turn to with the goal of keeping the general public safe and orderly, and those plans have been made available for the public to read. All residents are encouraged to have their individual plans that have been tailored to their particular household’s needs.
