Whether you are an incoming freshman, or already a high school student, college is bound to be a recent topic of discussion.
As the Kern High School District (KHSD) begins to offer students more opportunities to take college classes through Bakersfield College, it is important to understand what the different types of early college access include.
Dual enrollment
Most dual enrollment students are in high school, and these courses are typically taught by high school teachers. Examples of this at Bakersfield High School 12 Honors English taught by Dawn Kelly-Swift or Craig Holiday’s U.S. History class.
Students wishing to enroll must be approved to do dual enrollment by their school district, and they are encouraged to speak with their counselor.
One benefit is that through this program, all college fees and materials needed for the classes are either cleared or provided. Not only would high school students be able to start college with some of their required classes completed, but it can save them thousands of dollars.
Concurrent enrollment
These courses will have high school and college students, and they are taught entirely by college professors.
Students wishing to enroll in a concurrent must be approved by a counselor or administrator, and they need to be cleared by Admissions and Records to enroll. There are a variety of courses that students can take through Bakersfield College as a part of the concurrent enrollment program.
Tuition fees are typically cleared, but some extra fees may apply due to loans and supplies.
If you are a determined learner or just want to get ahead in life this may be a great choice for you!
There are many pathways to choose from; some of these include medical, law, psychology, and much more. Choosing to do early college through Bakersfield College allows you to graduate high school with not only a diploma but also an associate’s (AA or AS) degree.
