Meet the Teacher
Mike McCoy, known as both Mr. Mike and Mr. McCoy around campus, grew up in Bakersfield and attended Frontier High School.
After high school, he went to Chico State to find his passion for welding. Before he focused on welding, McCoy was a manager at Rio Bravo Country Club. Over several years and many jobs, McCoy has always been a handyman and focused on helping out the community.
McCoy loves to show his students not just welding, but learning the responsibilities that come with becoming a welder. He teaches a full four-year welding course as a part of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program at BHS.
About McCoy
McCoy has had a passion for welding ever since he was a little boy, as he learned from his grandfather who was a water pipe liner in the 70s.
He’s always been a family kind of guy. He loves to spend quality time with his fiancée and loves listening to Taylor Swift with her.
“Happy wife, happy life,” is just one motto that McCoy joked that he lives by.
McCoy also loves to spend time watching baking competition shows on Netflix if he’s not in the shop welding.
His favorite food at the moment is mozzarella sticks because of the cheese and the crumbly bits on them.
“It’s like Oreos,” McCoy compares them to.
While this comparison may have left “The Blue and White” staff a bit puzzled, it reflects the fun and free-thinking spirit of McCoy.
McCoy on Campus
McCoy enjoys teaching his Ag mechanic students and just being involved with campus life.
While McCoy likes participating in FFA life with the students, like going on trips, these adventures are anything but uneventful.
On one of these trips, McCoy was attacked by a bear. Anytime the story arises, people often question how this would occur or if he’s joking.
McCoy explains that he woke up in the middle of the night on a retreat after hearing a bunch of noise, and he decided to check it out. Lo and behold, a bear attacked his head. While the experience was shocking, he’s happy that it had happened to him and not any of the students on the trip.
One thing that is undeniable about McCoy is that he loves what he does as a teacher, and he wants more students to join the program. He wants students to learn new skills that they did not even know they had in them.
