Reading has helped tremendously during this pandemic and has let me escape this harsh reality for a good amount of time. I’ve been reading for as long as I can remember and I really love imagining new worlds just by looking at words on a page. I encourage any and all of the people that might want to read the books I’m going to talk about, to please check some of the trigger warnings for them. You may think that the content won’t affect you but it wouldn’t hurt to check for safety reasons!
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Yes, you read that right; I said Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite romance/classical books. This book serves one of the greatest enemies-to-lovers romances I’ve ever read. It also is a great book to binge read by the beach or while you’re sitting in a cozy location. I’m a HUGE fan of angsty romances and women fighting for their rights and not settling for men that they don’t deserve. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s relationship had its ups and downs but you know from the beginning that they’re going to get their happily ever after. Also the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film is phenomenal and I’m still not over that beautiful rain proposal scene.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Oh. My. Goodness. This book left me speechless in the best way possible. It’s an adult historical fiction, romance with some wlw (woman love woman) gayness and I couldn’t get enough of it. Basically, this book follows Evelyn Hugo, a rising star in the film industry, throughout her life as a bisexual woman in a very sexist time period (1950’s to late 1980’s). Evelyn Hugo also manages to have seven husbands along the way and ultimately finds true love in a forbidden romance. Taylor Jenkins Reid does a marvelous job constructing the character’s in her book and making them feel like they’re real people with real emotions. This book had me running to my tissue box when I read the ending and I just love when authors have the ability to make me sob (that sounds really sad but I promise I’m okay).
Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
This is a pretty popular series within the fantasy genre because it is incredible. The essential premise of this book is that there’s six, unlikeable, clever, and charming, main characters who are tasked together to pull off a rather risky heist. That is if they don’t kill one another first… The main reason I’m utterly obsessed with this series is because of how shocking the plot is and how witty the characters are. I’m more of a character-driven reader as opposed to a plot one but this series served both a greatly paced plot and characters I couldn’t help but fall in love with.
